Using the Wrong Screw: A Painful Lesson in iPhone Repair

This is often at the fault of someone else trying to repair something completely different in the phone, most common is usually screen replacement, and then using the wrong screw as they put it all back together.  Most companies standardize screws in their products, but not Apple

The problem occurs when replacing the 4 screws that hold down the plate over the screen connectors. If the screws get swapped and one of the longer screws is placed in the hole for the shorter, it will damage the logic board. The phone will boot loop, displaying a blue screen at the end of the boot loop and if a restore is attempted it will fail giving an error 14 or error 9 in iTunes.

The screws as shown in the 2nd picture.

  • The red ones are 1.7mm long
  • The yellow one, 1.3mm
  • The orange one, 1.2mm

If you install either red or yellow screws into the orange spot, a common mistake because normal eyesight can not detect a 0.1mm difference? The screw will cut into the PCB as shown in the 3rd picture and break several traces, as shown in the 4th picture after removing the solder mask, causing a blue screen error on the phone. Picture 5 shows the repair.

iPhonefixit, can repair this with advanced micro soldering technique and bridging the breaks in these traces with microscopic copper wire (the width of a human hair). On average it takes them around 2 hours to do the repair, though they’ve done a few in just under an hour.

Note: This repair is not always successful and will depend on the extent of the damage
